The Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) in New York has launched the country’s first Tibetan-language Facebook page, aimed at providing Tibetan immigrants with access to essential information and resources in their native language. Speaking to RFA, Tenzin Tseyang, a staff member at MOIA, emphasized the broader significance of this initiative. “As an ethnic group striving to preserve our language, this is a crucial step forward. While the Chinese government continues to suppress the Tibetan language inside Tibet through restrictive policies, we in exile are doing everything possible to protect and promote our linguistic heritage,” she said. Over the past year, the Chinese government has closed Tibetan language schools run by monasteries in Tibet and transferred young monks to government-operated regular schools. The Chinese government is strictly implementing an education policy prioritizing Mandarin Chinese instruction in regions designated as ethnic minority areas, including Tibet. In conversation with Tenzin Chime, an educationist analyzes the background of various measures being implemented by the Chinese government over the past decade in Tibet. These measures aim to “assimilate” Tibetan identity, language, and culture into the mainstream Han Chinese ethnicity. In October 2024, after 21 rounds of military talks and 17 rounds of diplomatic discussions, India and China reached a significant border agreement. RFA speaks with Dr. Tsewang Dorjee, a researcher at the Tibet Policy Institute, to explore the importance of this deal and its potential long-term implications as we move into 2025.
