#132 Tibetans in Diaspora | FT: Tenzin Tsewang | Stories of Tibetans #212
Tenzin Tsewang was born in Tawang, India, to Tibetan parents. One of his late father’s deepest wishes was to return to Tibet, a dream that sadly went unfulfilled. Carrying this legacy, Tsewang hopes to visit Tibet at least once in his lifetime.
A dedicated follower of Tibetan news, Tsewang is deeply affected by the plight of political prisoners in Tibet and the ongoing tragedy of colonial boarding schools. However, living in exile leaves him feeling powerless to directly influence these issues.
During his college years, Tsewang actively participated in protests against Chinese oppression, particularly during the visits of Chinese officials to India. At one such protest, he witnessed a harrowing moment that forever shaped his life: Pawo Jamphel Yeshi engulfed himself in flames in a self-immolation protest against Chinese rule in Tibet. That experience profoundly impacted Tsewang, revealing to him the powerful role of storytelling through the lens of a camera.
Motivated by this realization, Tsewang pursued a career in filmmaking. Over the years, he has created several short and medium-length films in exile, including Dolma, Jalyong, and various music videos.
Now based in McLeod Ganj, Tsewang is dedicated to sharing the skills and knowledge he has gained, mentoring the next generation of storytellers.
