Behind the Scenes of Xi Jinping’s Visit to Tibet: The Leaders, the Dam, and Beijing’s Bigger Tibet Strategy On 20 August 2025, Xi Jinping made a rare visit to Lhasa, his first since 2021, to mark the 60th founding anniversary of the so-called “Tibet Autonomous Region” (TAR). The highly choreographed and symbolic visit has drawn significant attention — not only for where he went and where he didn’t, but also for who accompanied him and who did not.
