Eileen Wang, mayor of Arcadia in Southern California, has resigned after agreeing to plead guilty to acting as an illegal agent of the Chinese government, U.S. prosecutors said on May 11. Authorities said Wang worked with Yaoning “Mike” Sun to post content favorable to China through a website serving the local Chinese American community. Prosecutors said some material was shared or edited at the direction of Chinese officials. Sun is already serving four years in prison for the same charge. Wang, who became mayor in February, could face up to 10 years in federal prison.
