China threatens harsh measures against Tibetans seeking freedom.
Wang Huning, director of the Central Tibet Work Coordination Group—the Chinese Communist Party’s main body on Tibet—used the 60th anniversary of the so-called ‘Tibet Autonomous Region’ to reiterate threats against Tibetans seeking freedom, dismissing their legitimate aspirations.
“Even after more than 66 years of occupation and six decades since the imposition of the so-called ‘TAR,’ Beijing continues to justify its rule with the same rhetoric of control and suppression,” said Bhuchung K. Tsering of the International Campaign for Tibet, commenting on the anniversary celebrations. “This reflects China’s ongoing attempt to reinforce the political legitimacy of its occupation while ignoring the genuine aspirations of the Tibetan people.”
