Located just 19 km from Leh, Thiksey Monastery is one of the largest and most beautiful monasteries in Ladakh. Perched on a hilltop, it resembles the iconic Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. This 12-story monastery is home to a large number of monks and holds ancient Buddhist scriptures, stupas, thangkas, and a 49-foot-high statue of Maitreya Buddha—the largest of its kind in Ladakh. The serene surroundings, fluttering prayer flags, and panoramic views of the Indus Valley make this place feel truly spiritual and timeless.
