A picture of a Tibetan mother with her baby tied to her back and shovelling the earth on a road construction site somewhere in Himalayan India in the 1960’s reminds Tenzin Kunga* of his grandmother’s grim, determined early years in exile and three generations of Tibetans who have dared to survive to defy the Chinese for their occupation of their homeland, keeping alive their national identity and their hopes undiminished under the inspiring leadership of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
