Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the GST structure has been simplified into two slabs—5% and 18%—replacing the earlier four-tier system. A separate 40% tax will apply to sin goods such as cigarettes. Everyday items like food, school supplies, and insurance will now cost less, while imported liquor and premium cars will become pricier. The reforms aim to ease living costs, spur domestic demand, and shield India’s economy from external trade pressures.
