Law and Justice in Pre 1959 Tibet:Examining China’s Propaganda about Tibet’s Legal System.
This podcast discusses China's recurrent propaganda claiming that traditional Tibetan law and punishment were barbaric, and provides a range of evidence that many forms of judicial torture and punishment were actually introduced to Tibet by the Manchu ambans. With the accession of the 13th Dalai Lama to power in 1895, Tibet became one of the first countries in the world to abolish the death penalty and cruel and inhumane punishments. In contrast, Communist China carries out more death sentences annually than the rest of the world combined, with estimates running into the thousands. The exact number is classified as a state secret.
