On 10 March 1959, thousands of Tibetans in Lhasa, Tibet’s capital, rose up to defend their freedom, faith, culture, and national identity in the face of invading Chinese Communist forces. What began as a peaceful gathering became a defining moment in Tibet’s modern history – a national uprising met with brutal force and followed by decades of illegal occupation.
Sixty-seven years on, Tibetans across the world continue to honour that courage. March 10 is both a commemoration and a renewed appeal for justice, human rights, and dignity for the Tibetan people.
