Namkyi, former political prisoner, testified at 17th Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy
Namkyi, a former Tibetan political prisoner and recent escapee from Tibet, delivered a powerful testimony at the 17th Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy in Geneva, Switzerland, on February 18, 2024.
Her address titled, “From Prison Walls to Global Advocacy: Namkyi Speaks for Tibet,” shared her personal journey into exile, highlighting the dire situation inside Tibet.
Namkyi was arrested by the Chinese authorities at the age of 15 for protesting against the regime’s oppression of Tibetans. She was held without trial in a detention center for thirteen months, facing physical and mental torture. At her sham trial, she was sentenced to three years imprisonment on the trumped-up charge of undertaking "separatist acts against the nation." After being released, Namkyi and her aunt escaped their homeland by walking for 10 days to reach India.
