Powerful Quake Hits Tibet, Impact Shrouded by China's Censorship

Overlooking Tibet’s vast plateau, a woman weeps as she films the ruins of a maroon-painted nunnery destroyed by a magnitude-7.1 earthquake in Dingri County, Shigatse Prefecture.

"The whole nunnery has collapsed. I can hardly bear to look at it," she says, her voice breaking.

With temperatures plunging to -18°C, fears mount for those trapped in the rubble.

For Tibetans abroad, limited contact with loved ones in the tightly controlled region has left videos like this as the only glimpse of the disaster’s impact beyond state media and official reports.

Chinese state media reports 126 deaths and over 330 injuries. Officials say large-scale rescue operations have ended, with more than 400 people pulled from the rubble.
