The Sikkim government has enforced a strict 15-day ban on animal slaughter and meat sales to honor a sacred Buddhist holy fortnight in the lunar calendar. This prohibition, strongly supported by groups like SIBLAC, aims to preserve regional cultural heritage and promote non-violence during the First Lunar Month. While imported fish sales remain permitted, local fishing and fresh meat trading are strictly illegal. Violators face a 1,000-rupee fine. Rare exceptions, such as weddings or zoo feedings, require prior written permission. Local police and the Ecclesiastical Department are actively monitoring shops to ensure total statewide compliance.
