Founded in the 17th century by the 5th Dalai Lama, Tawang Monastery continues to preserve this masked dance, which is performed during major religious festivals to symbolize spiritual purification and the triumph of wisdom over ignorance. During a recent visit, Tibet Radio documented how Tawang’s unique Cham Dance—deeply rooted in ancient Tibetan culture—endures as a living heritage, passed down through generations despite the pressures of modernization.
