UN rights chief slams China over abuses in Tibet, East Turkestan and Hong Kong at UNHRC 59
At the opening of the 59th UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk issued a call for China to address widespread human rights abuses in Tibet, East Turkestan, and Hong Kong.
In his global rights update, Türk expressed frustration over Beijing's failure to enact key legal reforms or resolve individual cases of concern. He highlighted continuing reports of arbitrary detention, harsh sentencing, and repression of cultural and civic freedoms. Türk urged Chinese authorities to align laws with international human rights standards and release all those imprisoned for exercising basic rights.
