VOA Director Kasur Tenzin Tethong Namgyal on the uncertain future of VOA Tibetan Service
Over the years, World Press Freedom Day has marked modest yet meaningful triumphs for exile Tibetan media, persevering in pushing against China’s relentless disinformation campaigns and severe censorship within Tibet. Despite formidable challenges, these media outlets have served as a critical conduit for reliable information from inside Tibet to the outside world.
However, this hard-won momentum now faces a roadblock as the two most vital pillars sustaining this information ecosystem—the Tibetan Services of Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Asia (RFA)—are facing uncertain roads ahead. Many observers deem these developments unprecedented, signalling a potentially pivotal moment for the Tibetan exile media. What was once a steady stream of news and updates may soon dwindle into silence.
To better understand the implications of this looming crisis, Phayul spoke with Kasur Tethong Tenzin Namgyal la, Director of VOA Tibetan Service. In this in-depth conversation, he offered critical insights into the current state of the service, its indispensable role in combating state-sponsored propaganda, and the far-reaching consequences that its potential shutdown could have on the Tibetan freedom movement and the global Tibetan community.
