Why India Sheltered the Dalai Lama — India’s Former NSA Shivshankar Menon
Shivshankar Menon is a retired Indian diplomat and statesman of Indian Foreign Service who served as the 4th National Security Advisor of India to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Mr. Menon speaks at the celebration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 75 years of spiritual and temporal leadership of Tibet. He reflects on why India welcomed the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan community, and why protecting Tibetan culture is a responsibility for the world.
He explains that Tibetan Buddhism’s message of compassion and harmony enriches millions worldwide — and losing it would be a tragedy for humanity. Mr. Menon also stresses that the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation is a spiritual matter to be decided only by the Tibetan community, free from government interference.
